I have NO idea what they're doing here. Can someone a bit more versed in these matters weigh in?

Well, one of Musashi's secondaries got knocked out but Akagi's aircraft are marking the positions of the Zumwalts with smoke clouds for Friedrich der Grosse to spot since they can't radio back spotting information for various reasons (including a lack of radios and enemy comms jamming).

This is a perfect summary, thanks.

This story arc worked out a lot better in my head than it did formulated to a 4-koma classic newspaper strip format. And I might be a Marine and thus part of the Navy proper, maybe I bit off a bit more than I could chew when it came to coordinating a surface battle from two disparate eras. So far nobody has come to me telling me my terminology (or math!) is way off.

I have seen three problems with the tactics here although two of them may just be a matter of not being discussed by the characters since it was too obvious.

    1) The Zumwalts' maritime reconnaissance helicopters didn't play any role whatsoever which is odd since they're incredibly useful for gaining targeting data from beyond the horizon although the fact that Akagi-chan's fighters are in the air would have made them easy prey which may explain things a bit.
    2) Modern-day anti-ship missiles would just go splat against the belt armor of WWII-era battleships with minimal damage but again, it may just have never been stated that they received the appropriate modifications.
    3) and this is the big one, the Zumwalts still aren't shooting at the enemy aircraft. I'm having trouble figuring out why that could be although there could be a number of reasons why they can't or won't shoot them down.

I've considered all of these things while working on this story arc. That's not to say my solutions are correct or could be applied in a real-world situation; there's also the expedience in the narrative required by a 4-panel newspaper/4koma format. Certainly there's some ridiculous aspects to what's going on here, but I did the best I could.

TB treated those as a handicap and removed them. The Zumwalt already has missile launchers, torpedoes, and Bushmasters (we'll get to those in a minute.) All of these have GPS + smart/auto-targeting capabilities while even the relatively more advanced Friedrich still has to target the traditional way. Then there's the two Arleigh Burkes with similar capabilities. This trio can also maneuver better than even Spence can, but --

Spence, Musashi, Akagi-chan and Friedrich can outrun them. It's the only advantage they have aside from caliber.

    2) Modern-day anti-ship missiles would just go splat against the belt armor of WWII-era battleships with minimal damage but again, it may just have never been stated that they received the appropriate modifications.

That's true. However, anti-ship missiles can be very precise.

Remember, traditional battleship combat generally occurred at the furthest possible distance (hence the pre-war Pagoda mast refits on IJN BB/BCs.) While clobbering the superstructure with HE and vaporising the vessel's entire leadership and communications is optimal, at typical battleship combat distance, they're going to aim directly at the largest visible part of the enemy vessel which is going to be dead center along the belt (similarly, in infantry combat, you're not going to try to always get a headshot or shoot their legs at distance. You're going to aim directly for their torso.)

With a missile and today's technology, taking out Musashi's primary and secondary armament along with the conning tower for good measure from very outset is realistic. That's all you have to do take out any sort of BB/BC to leave her dead and useless in this scenario.

    3) and this is the big one, the Zumwalts still aren't shooting at the enemy aircraft. I'm having trouble figuring out why that could be although there could be a number of reasons why they can't or won't shoot them down.

Several reasons. Remember, Akagi-chan reverted herself to her triple-deck configuration, thus limiting herself to the usage of immediate post-WWI biplanes. While slow, and likely lacking radios, they're biplanes made from doped canvas and wood. At 4600m (15,000 feet), they're well out of the effective range of the Arleigh Burke's Bushmasters and even if the Bushmasters were able to get some hits on them, its rounds would likely and harmlessly pass right through the plane's canvas (which is essentially why none of Ark Royal's Swordfish were shot down. This is what Akagi-chan was referring to when she mentioned Bismarck's period of instruction from earlier.)

Missiles could very likely swat those biplanes down, but there's two enemy super-battleships and a carrier armed with dual 8" guns to contend with already.

So, if you were the skipper of a Zumwalt, would you take enemy biplanes that are effectively 3 miles away with any sort of seriousness, especially when there's a legendary battleship with 18" guns rushing your position at 34 knots? This is my reasoning, anyway.
