I saw that scene of the movie on the ship's TV system when on some orders underway. (There are some TV channels on the ship that play movies all day and night and I have seen many fragments of various random movies when TVs are set to those channels in the dining areas or work spaces. I rarely had time to actually sit through an entire film while underway.)
In any case, when something not known to science grows as fast as that thing, you probably want to handle it through robot arms instead of gloves, and be ready to kill it with fire!
One of the funniest parts of Moby Dick was when Ishmael confides to the reader that he never had much luck at the whalespotting aspect of his job because he'd get absorbed in his own thoughts and the great view he had up on the top of the mast.
