[Honkai: Star Rail] Costume implications

As I discussed in topic #33053, this is another reason why we shouldn't have three-level implications like this. Just have Dan Heng (Lurking) imply the base Dan Heng (Honkai: Star Rail) tag instead of Dan Heng (Permansor Terrae). Leave Dan Heng (Permansor Terrae) to be for the default outfit for that form.

To my eyes these things are just different outfits for the same guy, yet we're treating them as alternate forms that get outfits of their own, which of course makes things more complicated:

@evazion I just backread the thread to see this after approving the implications, but this doesn't make sense. post #10365457, post #10203330, etc are all clearly the same version of the character. And that's not counting things like post #10379174, which don't reference any specific variant, or the random genderswaps.
post #7633597 does not refer to a specific skin. Which tag do we use for this specific subvariant?

The problem is not that Imbibitor Lunae and Permansor Terrae both look similar to the Hunt tag. The problem is that if i want, specifically, to look for one variant (for story reasons, for example), it's impossible to do so without an intermediate umbrella tag. The moment there's more than two variants it becomes impossible for any non-gold+ to find them.

To put it in plain terms without the nonsensical tag names: if I want to search for just Dan Heng in his golden dragon form, or just Dan Heng in his blue dragon form, I have to do it with a two tag search, which precludes any other high information tag like sex or yaoi vs hetero. We've seen this with fate before. If I wanted to look at Saber Alter specifically before we reworked those tags we had to do a 4 or 5 tag search just to find all versions of her.

You're asking that we do this:

  • dan heng
    • dan heng random skin variant 1
    • dan heng random skin variant 2
    • dan heng blue dragon variant, skin 1 (<-- random non-skin 1 fanart of blue dragon variant gets dumped here because this tag was first)
    • dan heng blue dragon variant, skin 2
    • dan heng yellow dragon variant, skin 1
    • dan heng yellow dragon variant, skin 2

How is this helpful in any form to our users?

These aren't even small tags, Imbibitor Lunae (blue dragon) has 1k posts, and a lot of them are stuff like dan_heng_(imbibitor_lunae)_(honkai:_star_rail) nude where you can't tell which skin it is. Would your opinion be different if the tag were called dan heng (blue dragon) and dan heng (blue dragon) (old costume)?

I'm fine with the implications now. The problem I originally had was that the wikis didn't explain these tags well, so it was hard to see what the actual difference was between them.

In short:

That's it. The difference is the horns. Each form has multiple outfits, but you can tell which form it is by the horns.

The problem was that the wiki didn't actually say this, and it didn't list all the character's tags together on one page so you couldn't easily see this. Sometimes people want to make umbrella tags for outfits that have nothing visually in common, which was what I thought was happening here until the wikis were rewritten and I could see the difference between each tag.

I appreciate that we have some actual signal on this topic because it was confusing running around with no actual guidance on what the problem with the implications were after trying several edits and BURs multiple times to no avail. The wikis had been edited and discussed but it felt like we were fighting amongst ourselves for virtually no reason and trying to guess what you meant or wanted to see. Even after the wikis had been fixed, the BURs being left in limbo didn't do much for this. The same thing happened to Evernight (Honkai: Star Rail) and is pending for Cyrene (Honkai: Star Rail).

For Honkai: Star Rail people, this is why I say, we really need a dedicated wiki writer to keep up with this. The wikis are so old and unmanaged that Cyrene (Honkai: Star Rail) is still listed as an "upcoming playable character" in List of Honkai: Star Rail characters. I have my hands tied with gardening the wikis and tags of 3 other copyrights that I'm not done with and are no small endeavour otherwise I might consider contributing to the effort.

If you need a reference, especially for characters with multiple forms, please use Herta (Honkai: Star Rail) as guidance on how to format it. You don't need a PHD to write it, just do some basic formatting, add a basic sentence and it can be fleshed out later.
