This sparked a lot of memes because, before this World Cup, almost no one knew anything about Cape Verde, we even made fun of them for being a weak team... but no, they weren't; they really surprised us, especially thanks to Cabral and vozinha.

I guess I would never get this since in Brazilian and European Portuguese he receive the names Recruta/Soldado respectively (lowest military rank)
