I think it's a temporal projection of the state of the tray throughout multiple usages into a single representation. Perhaps first the fish meal and then followed with a glass of wine and bread (the fish plate is distinct from the others in the cast of its shadow). It's clearly pulling from Italian futurism, compare it with Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 or Balla's Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash and you'll see similar effects, perhaps executed better.
