One downvote shouldn't hide comments

Destructive comments won't help you in this forum topic.
I used to think that a -1 threshold is too high, but you can change the setting and since I can see the scores on each comment, I can say that posts that don't deserve the -1 are getting upvoted eventually.

Sooo.... I don't need any help in this forum topic.

I have embraced that a single person downvoting you means you shitposted and your comment should be hidden. A single downvote means you were Hitler.

I know you will embrace this, sempai, and not whine like a bitch if a single person downvotes and hides everything you have ever posted, senpai, because that means you were just a shitposter, senpai. You said that was just the will of the world, senpai, and I will fulfill this for you.

Tonikaku... I'm an asshole. Do you really want ME to be able to disappear you with a single click?

I keep forgetting that most people don't use a CSS (userscript?) to see comment score. It's pretty common to see average comments at -1. Usually the junk is filtered by -3, and that's where I had mine set to stop displaying back before I became a mod and changed it to -9999.

I am totally with this... -5 filters out 99.999% of the crap. -3 is 99%. And if you're triggered for 1/100 comments is that really that life threatening?

sarusa said:

Yeah, there we go. According to BrokenEagle98's stats - out of 194 comments, 8 would have been hidden with a -5 threshold. Thirteen if you want to go with -3.

Those -1 or -2 comments aren't life threatening at all. Go ahead, look at them, if your snowflake head explodes, I'll paypal you some starch.

You’re reading that statistic incorrectly. That’s not 195 comments (at the moment) but 195 users with more than 10 comments during the past 30 days. DanbooruBot’s 16 negative votes mean that all of its 634 comments received 16 negative votes in total. From what I see, the bot’s messages usually receive only one downvote to hide them.

As you want numbers, here’s how I see it from regularly looking out for garbage comments.

  • -1 can either be a somewhat annoying comment or a statement that someone disagreed with.
  • -2 is usually a bad comment.
  • -3 is usually safely in the “garbage” area.
  • -4 is already pretty rare and almost always garbage.
  • -5 and below are rare and are pretty much guaranteed to be garbage.

“Garbage” means the usual stuff mentioned in the Commenting Guidelines, such as made up dialogue, useless one-liners or people sharing their fetishes that nobody wants to hear. Racism and sexism seem to be pretty uncommon on Danbooru from what I see. However, strong political statements and patriotism can also be quickly voted down despite not counting as the previously mentioned garbage.

That said, as the Commenting Guidelines mention, Danbooru considers itself rather focused (compared to other images boards, I guess) and idle banter is discouraged. Thus, I think the fact that comments are hidden below a score of 0 is not because they’re “triggering” someone, as you call it, but rather because they’re off-topic and don’t contribute to the image at hand.

I wholeheartedly appreciate the current system because I come here for the images (and translations ♡), not for useless comments. If you want lively discussions with controversial opinions, maybe you should look elsewhere.

Edit:
For reference, user #462838 was recently banned for trash comments, which usually scored in the -2 to -4 range.
High negative numbers are rare because comments are already hidden at -1, resulting in less users seeing them and voting them down further.

-snip senpai shitposting-

Godwin's law strikes again.

Anyways, a "single person vindictively downvoting everything you ever said" is something you can certainly bug a mod/admin about - in the same vein as someone constantly downvoting your uploads.
The current threshold is fine, can be changed by every user, and hidden comments can be displayed and upvoted if they didn't deserve being hidden (something I've done or seen happen quite a few times in the past.) At most I'd support bumping the default to -1 rather than 0, but it's fine as is.

Essentially, seconding what was said by kittey above me.

I think this is much simpler than anything that actually requires discussion; it's like the "moooooods i can't see shota what do you mean i have to paaaaaaaay" threads all over again.

You can change the comment threshold freely anytime, right? Then just change it to whatever you want. Problem solved.
I don't really care if the default threshold is changed, I'll just change it to 0 again whenever it's changed; so I won't say I'm either in favor or against that decision. I'm probably not the only one who thinks that, too.

To the OP: everyone has their own right to hide whatever the hell they want because maybe they don't want to put up with the retarded/salty/horny shit that is constantly said, and instead of opening a whole thread for this kind of thing, it'd be way easier to just change your own comment threshold to whatever you feel it's fine. No internet arguments, no wasting 12 hours discussing here! Everybody wins!

sarusa said:

Just a single down-vote shouldn't hide a comment.

All you need is one cranky or vindictive a-hole to hide something, and even when I down-vote a comment I almost never want to disappear it. I'm just saying buuuu, but you may disagree.

How about -5? Disappearing should only be for catastrophically shit tier.

Well imagine if we had voting on the forums. How bad that'd be for you. This unproductive and whining thread would have had 5 downvotes already. Please write out a detailed report of all your complaints about Danbooru and release it in a corked bottle out at sea. This is this best way for having your much valued input considered and incorporated into the site.

sarusa said:

Yes, I agree, let's cleanse the world from shitposting, a single vote at a time senpai. I know you won't complain, senpai. And as you've all said so very eloquently, a single person wouldn't vindictively downvote everything you ever said unless you were shitposting, senpai.

FYI, trying to be sarcastic doesn't help to carry your point across. Besides, if vindictive downvoting is actually being a concern, we can actually build mod tools to monitor that and punish offenders. It was brought up before, maybe it should be considered again, though there's still a lot to discuss about that - namely, not giving mods too much power, or there's a chance they'll go hunt people who downvoted their comments.

And learn your etiquette, it's Type-sama, not senpai.

sarusa said:

'Users' have no idea there are settings. This is the most basic UX, and the reason Apple has the largest market cap.

I choose to believe that this site's users are on average more intelligent and resourceful than you give them credit for. Anyone too helpless to find the account settings page and see for themselves the options available is likely incapable of having created an account in the first place.

If the majority of us don't change the threshold, it's because we are satisfied with the default setting and prefer them to be left alone, thank you very much.

Thoughts

I have a strong suspicion that if the default score is lowered, all of the negative scores would see an increase in percentage. So if you lower it to -1, then -2 will become the new -1, i.e. it would rise to around 4%. This is because bad comments would continue to be downvoted until they are no longer visible, which seems to be the real cutoff point.

I've yet to find a way to see which users have voted on a post or comment, though I don't use the API.

It's best that someone should suggest to albert to change the comment system on Danbooru and base it on older versions of Disqus where comment votes are counted with numbered tallies of upvotes and downvotes, moderation and hiding of comments with 5 downvotes or more to stop the comment downvote 'abuse' which I'm frustrated with already. Only that kind of commenting system can be the ultimate solution!

Comments already have scores, but you need to use an add-on to see them (I think? I don't really know, I only use mobile now.) Also, you can set comments to that threshold in your settings, by setting it at -5, if you desire.

You can see them via the Danbooru Ex userscript (see about:userscripts).

I try to see everything, because I don't like stuff being hidden; and I don't downvote, even those comments I despise.

There's no particular point for this mechanism other than for the sensitive flowers --- if the site doesn't want youtube comments just ban the user when he offends. He can still visit the site, just not log in.

I would support changing the default comment threshold to -1 or -2, to prevent certain flukes (i.e. a misclick, misinterpretation, or stray dislike) from hiding a comment from the majority of the userbase. The present default can feel unwelcoming and arbitrary to less experienced users, and there's no particular reason not to set it to a value that makes sense right out of the box. With a change, we'd start to see a greater proportion of consensus-bad posts at -2 or -3 and borderline ones at -1, and generally less complaints about the fairness of the system.

What you're asking for wouldn't amount to much. Any change to the default wouldn't affect any of the existing 550K users. It would only affect new users. Even for those users, they could just change it back to -1 through their settings.
