Admins haven't taken a stance on this because it's one of those tags that are a hard nut to crack. There's merits for both sides of the argument, but for the sake of getting these out of limbo, I'll take a stance here.

I'll say it's fine to have them, because I can think of many scenarios where someone would want to search for any of these tags. Some cases:

  • just looking at pics of motherly/fatherly love
  • looking at specific kinds of motherly/fatherly love (a father with his son will be much different than a father with his daughter)
  • narrowing down incest
  • the ambiguous gender tags, in particular, are useful for pictures of nonhuman characters (post #10930443)

(It's a mass update because of size requirements, the implications will be made after this is approved)

mass update mother_and_child -> parent_and_child
mass update father_and_child -> parent_and_child
mass update step-parent_and_step-child -> parent_and_child
mass update adoptive_parent_and_adoptive_child -> parent_and_child

Now, the annoying part is adoptive parent and adoptive child and step-parent and step-child.

Do we want these to be completely separate? Or do we want to imply adoptive parent and adoptive child and step-parent and step-child to parent and child?

The alternative is making them all mutually exclusive, which will make it really hard to search for all of them, and will also cause dispersion between all these tags (nobody's gonna remember to tag both mother and daughter and parent and child, intuitively they'd expect one to grab the other).

I think there's merit in the idea of an implication, simply because the vast majority of parent and child posts will be of normal families, so those tags won't cause much noise inside it, and at the same time people will be able to search for just any parent-child relationship at once and be able to narrow it down if they want to. In any case, feel free to vote on this.

(Same as before, updates instead of implications because of size requirements)

create implication mother_and_daughter -> mother_and_child
create implication mother_and_son -> mother_and_child
create implication father_and_daughter -> father_and_child
create implication father_and_son -> father_and_child
create implication father_and_child -> parent_and_child
create implication step-parent_and_step-child -> parent_and_child
create implication adoptive_parent_and_adoptive_child -> parent_and_child

I actually did this in the wrong order, so now I gotta split this.
