We have 95k posts under star and 20k posts under star (sky). It doesn't make much sense to have the first with such an ambiguous name, as it invites a lot of mistags.
There's several under star night_sky -star_(sky) -star-shaped_pupils -star_hair_ornament, though they're pretty hard to find.

Some random examples I've found: post #3717080, post #3908921, post #3577390, post #3546197.

star is better left as an ambiguous tag from which mistags can be sorted appropriately.

Also, starry background is pretty ambiguous. I've left its reimplication outside of this request, because there's many posts under starry_background starry_sky and most of them seem to be mistag. Can someone think of a better name for it? Otherwise I'm not sure it's a good idea to imply it to the symbol variant.

I would argue that it should be star_(shape) since stars don't have any particular meaning associated with them in the way power symbols and radiation symbols do. This would also be consistent with diamond_(shape) and spade_(shape).

+1 to disambiguating the tag in any case.

Well, we also have diamond (symbol). Also, drawn five-pointed stars are often symbolic of the actual sky stars, like in post #3881041 or post #3895610. The five-pointed star's shape historically is also a direct derivation of the shape a star's light takes in the sky, so there's heavy symbolism associated to it. There's a lot of examples of this under star night_sky. Overall I'm not sure which term is better.

BUR #2755 has been rejected.

mass update star_hair_ornament star -> star_hair_ornament -star
mass update star-shaped_pupils star -> star-shaped_pupils -star
mass update star_earrings star -> star_earrings -star
mass update star_print star -> star_print -star
mass update star_choker star -> star_choker -star
mass update star_necklace star -> star_necklace -star
mass update star_in_eye star -> star_in_eye -star
mass update star_hat_ornament star -> star_hat_ornament -star

Also bringing the status quo to the new tag. For the ones with starry_background, they'll have to be sorted manually I think. I'll try to do it in the next few weeks.

EDIT: The bulk update request #2755 (forum #167279) has been rejected by @nonamethanks.
