I always thought, why not just let it out on a suspended surface, like a table. If the bottom breaks through and hangs out the bottom then yay for discovery, if not, diglet has the space-time warping capabilities of a Dirac sea.

The dirt is just part of Diglett's body. he isn't coming up from underground, that's literally just part of him.

When he uses Metronome and gets Fly the dirt goes up with him. It's totally part of him.
