This is actually how one would generally eat pies in the medieval ages, as the pastry part was basically just flour and water, making it incredibly hard to chew. They were basically just a form of stew/soup and once you ate the insides, you threw the rest away, there are some records of people breaking their teeth trying to eat the crust of pies back then.

Besides, on some pies pastry originally was a safety measure to avoid ingestion figments of poisonous elements like lead from individual's (the mine worker for example) hands during the meal. You just eat out the filling and get rid of a crust.
