One of the main characters in The Lord of the Rings and other associated works in Tolkien's Legendarium.

Also known as Gandalf the Grey, he has the appearance of an old man with a big grey beard and wizard hat wielding a staff.

He was one of the five Istari, along with Saruman and Radagast, who formed the Order of Wizards, sent to Middle-Earth to guide its people.

He is portrayed by Sir Ian McKellen in Peter Jackson's film adaptions of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
