In case you didn't know, Stalin had a... complicated relationships (ru) with Orthodox Christianity. On english J. Stalin page there's only definite data regarding period '41-'45 are WWII and some his personal facts. May be I wasn't enough attentive to English page? I didn't find there any solid clues about religion, but there's exist page fully dedicated to that subject in Russian page (link above). And since then Russian Orthdox Churches had and still has quite an influence in people's masses while being backed by government to some extent.
Communism is not support to crush religion, but free people from religion domination, and people is actually equal in their religions (no Christian is superior than Buddhism or Muslim or vice versa) or don't choice any religion at all.
