Gyakuten Saiban -> Ace Attorney? (localized name discussion)

Posted under Tags

Since I've been here, we've switched to English names for Pokemon. We've switched to English names for Fire Emblem. Is it Gyakuten Saiban/Ace Attorney's turn?

The argument for changing those, as far as I'm aware, was that (unlike some fandoms, which do default to the Japanese names) the English-speaking fandom was more familiar with the localized names, and an English speaker coming here would search by those first. I think that's the case for GS/AA as well.

I don't have an empirical way to test that (especially since fandom nowadays mostly lives on Twitter, whose tag function sucks), but I looked at the 10 most recent English-language fics for the fandom on AO3, as well as the 10 most popular. (Filtering out Dai Gyakuten Saiban/Great Ace Attorney, where the character names are mostly unchanged.) All 20 used the English character names. I think your average English-speaking GS/AA fan is not going to tend to search by the characters' Japanese names, and I think it's at least something we could discuss changing, tag-wise.

Thoughts?

I had drafted up the original List of Gyakuten Saiban characters precisely for this reason, attaching the original Japanese names to their English counterparts. I wouldn't be against switching over to English names if it makes it easier for English users of this site to recognize them. This also means the aforementioned list would need to be switched around, linking English names and referencing their Japanese names.

The only game we can't apply English names to is Gyakuten Kenji 2 since that was never officially translated. It does have a fan translation, but I don't think it's a good idea to apply the fan translation's take on English names if they're not supposed to be official.
