Footwear Removed

Posted under Tags

BUR #6606 has been rejected.

create alias shoes_removed -> footwear_removed
create alias boots_removed -> footwear_removed
create alias sandals_removed -> footwear_removed
create alias slippers_removed -> footwear_removed

It seems very odd to have a general footwear removed tag alongside several specific shoes removed tags, with no implications and no direction on when to use which. In the case of headwear, hat removed and helmet removed both imply headwear removed. In the case of eyewear, glasses off and sunglasses removed are both aliased to eyewear removed. Legwear is ambiguous, like footwear.

I think there are three options: a) alias the specific tags to the general tag, b) imply the specific tags to the general umbrella tag, and c) nuke the general tag and just use specifics. I'm creating three BURs for these three options, to be voted on. I don't personally have a strong preference for which gets selected.

We also have shoe_removed, boot removed, and sandal removed for when a single shoe/boot is off. There's a few different ways we could go with these but I'll leave that for after we deal with the main tags to keep the BURs simple.

If we pick option a), we could also alias them to footwear removed and lose "one shoe off" as a taggable concept, or we could alias them to single footwear removed which is pretty ugly.
For option b), they could either imply footwear removed or a hypothetical single footwear removed.
For c), they're good as they are.

Discussed without much of an outcome in topic #14837 and topic #16883

BUR #6610 has been approved by @nonamethanks.

create implication shoes_removed -> shoes
create implication boots_removed -> boots
create implication sandals_removed -> sandals
create implication slippers_removed -> slippers

Optional BUR to go along with option B.

For shoes removed to be applicable, shoes must be visible in the image, per the wiki definitions. If there are no shoes in the image, shoes removed should not be used.

Despite what their name might suggest, these tags are focused on the object, not the person. So shoes removed means there's unworn shoes in the picture. The actual tag for a character with no shoes is no shoes.
See also evazion's point in forum #182483.

For this reason, I'm not sure that we really need footwear removed.

Admittedly I don't see the point for headwear removed for the same reason. It's worth noting that those implications were created in topic #7408 9 years ago, so this might be a good time to revisit those as well.

One thing to consider is whether we want these tags to imply no shoes however, since the characters don't have shoes on.

-1 to this because of the legwear clause, as you mentioned, and because, as I understand it, a character wearing one pair of shoes, with another pair next to them, would qualify for shoes removed but not no shoes.

I just found out there's also shoe removed, boot removed and sandal_removed, because of course there are. I will manually move these too because it seems it's a mix of single shoe and shoes removed with no easy way to sort them automatically.

Initially I had thought we could leave them alone, the distinction between shoe removed and single shoe being that the former is for one shoe, not being worn, regardless of whether there are feet in the image, while the latter is for one foot in a shoe, the other foot not in a shoe, regardless of whether the missing shoe is present in the image.

But I don't really think we need to or can maintain that distinction, and I agree that shoe removed is fine to be moved to shoes removed, as long as single shoe is added where appropriate (similarly for single boot etc.)
