The worktool tag

Posted under Tags

The idea when it was made seems to have been to be any tools (not specifically gardening ones) but individual ones, with tools used for images with a large number of tools in them. In practice, though, tools seems to be regularly used for things like post #2856616 which would have gone under worktool if the original purpose of the tag had been stuck to.

The wiki page for worktool is relatively new (created a few months ago) and didn't reflect its usage (if you discounted the things that had that tag thanks to implications) until your recent removals of a significant portion of all other tag uses.

Isn't "worktool" just an uncommon synonym of "tool"? It seems strange that we use this tag primarily for garden implements when it could be construed to encompass other tools such as those used for woodworking, measuring, or cleaning. I'd support merging worktool into tools, or aliasing to garden tool if we decide that hoes and shovels are too different from drills and chisels to fit under the same umbrella tag.

Also, I can't help but feel that the commenters in topic #6252 were a bit too hasty, both in assessing tools to be a tag for assortments of tools rather than individual tools, and in creating a new umbrella tag without actually deliberating what tags should fall under the umbrella. Even at the time of that thread, tools was being used for images like post #225387, post #708839, and post #869157, and its wiki has never suggested that this is improper usage. The question of what, exactly, constitutes a worktool was left unanswered as well, with only a couple implications (implications of dubious necessity, even) to guide us in how to use the tag. Why should shovel implicate another tag when hammer and saw don't implicate anything?

Am I the only one who thinks it's weird to tag toy shovels as trowel? They're toys, not tools.

Well thats a toy trowel. There are toy shovels to like this one. Thats one of the reasons I dont want an umbrella tool tag.

Anyway is there any way to request a tag to be nuked? Do we have a forum thread for pointless tags?

remove implication hoe -> worktool
remove implication shovel -> worktool

Link to request

I'm for nuking the worktool tag and sorting all the different objects to their own tags if they aren't already.

I don't think we need these two implicated either as there can be versions of the objects that are not worktools - and even then, worktool -hoe -shovel only has 35 posts.
