I don't like the *_sweater_vest tags. I have no idea what the difference is between a regular vest and a sweater vest, beyond the fact that one is knitted like a sweater. I don't actually think they are that different inherently to not fall under the regular *_vest tags.
So before I waste everyone's time with a potentially horrible BUR, I'd like to ask: why do these tags exist? I could've sworn we've had a discussion about this before, but I can't find where, so now I can't tell if its all in my head or not.

Aside from the previous discussion, well yeah that's the difference. It also helps that sweater vests are common on school uniforms, so they have quite a lot of representation. I wouldn't want to group them with non-sweater vests, they look quite obviously different too.

Yeah, if these tags really do help people, I don't think getting rid of them would do us any good. Sorry for the forum topic, but better to be safe than sorry before running a horrendous BUR I think.

i think we have sweater vests tags because sweater vests are a common item in school uniforms in japan
For more on the delineation. Sweater vests especially stand out from normal vests due to not being front-openable. The standard feature of a vest is being sleeveless and worn over other clothes essentially making it a sleeveless jacket. Sweater vests being made in the vein of sweaters are pullovers and cannot be opened from the front. They're very different from normal vests in general due to that and one could argue they're not vests at all. Alternatively, in some parts of the world, tank tops/sleeveless undershirts are considered vests. One could argue all sleeveless shirts and other upperwears are just vests under more broad definitions.
Sweater vest is far from the height of the hyper-specificity some tags can reach here. Any tag existing at all is because one person originally made the distinction and tagged it. If others continue to recognize that distinction and continue to properly tag it then it's definitely significant enough.
Edit: Also, the difference between a cardigan and any other jacket is because it's wool-knit like a sweater. Your initial post could be likened to wondering why we tag cardigan rather than put them under jackets in general. I can definitely believe there are a lot of people in real life who wouldn't know what cardigan specifically meant, but if you explained, they'd easily learn. Clothing due to being multi-cultural/multi-lingual often doesn't offer much hint to what type of wear they are from name alone. Qipao versus China Dress versus just calling it a dress would be another example. There is a massive variety of clothing and tagging usually follows the distinctions made in real life.
