I genuinely don't understand what the purpose of this would even be. Just several days worth of lag on post history for no reason

The basic jist of it is that nobody actually uses the term "virtual youtuber". It's like if cat was aliased to felis domesticus.
The evidence for this is that almost every wiki page for a Vtuber starts with a line like: A [[virtual youtuber|Vtuber]] from [[Hololive]] or An [[indie virtual youtuber|indie Vtuber]].

That's an extremely poor argument, since those were just standardized by the same person. In fact, in this specific case it's even accidental circular reasoning since this BUR was brought on by me pointing out to someone that [[virtual youtuber|Vtuber]] is stupid and shouldn't be done. It's just hiding what the link actually points to with no benefit.

It's worth pointing out that the whole reason why it's like that is because of one guy, who's been yelled at for shortening virtual YouTuber down to VTuber in the wikis due to hiding the actual underlying tag being linked, among other complaints regarding their wiki changes surrounding VTubers and gacha.

Should those tag links be changed back, then? This BUR doesn't seem likely to pass anyway.

The user in question is slowly changing them, but they're also addressing an earlier complaint they received where they kept reverting evazion's changes of "Default" to "1st costume" back to "Default" despite those not being what the tags are called, so if you want to help them out, they'd probably appreciate it.

I wish that people replying to this topic discussed the actual worthwhileness of the rename or utility alias more than about anything to do with post versions.
I think the main takeaway is that it's just a terminology change that barely anyone cares about so the main issue is whether or not it's worth clogging the site for hours/days for such a nothingburger of a change.
it just feels pretty arbitrary to shorten this tag's name in particular and (presumably) nothing else. you don't see anyone requesting to shorten Genshin Impact to Genshin, Neon Genesis Evangelion to Eva, Hatsune Miku to Miku, etc.

I do, I refuse to use the term "vtuber".

"Genshin Impact" "Neon Genesis Evangelion" and "Hatsune Miku" are all trademarks owned by corporations, so we have a definitive source to point to for what the official form should be. "Virtual YouTuber" is not a trademark owned by anyone, it's just a term, so there's no source besides whatever term people prefer to use more often in practice.
Furthermore "Genshin" "Eva" and "Miku" are all ambiguous given names that real-life people share, so they would need qualifiers anyway. "VTuber" is not ambiguous at all.
A better comparison would be "heterosexual" vs "hetero" - not trademarked, not ambiguous, just a full term vs its shortened form. And Danbooru does use the short form in that case.
Actually, it seems hetero's popularity gap over heterosexual is much slimmer than vtuber's gap over virtual youtuber:

topic #22733 (and to a minor extent topic #18451) disagrees apparently.
This whole thing is so pointless and stupid, everyone and their grandma knows that "vtuber" is short for "virtual youtuber", and yeah, while saying "virtual youtuber" feels straight out of 2016-2018 and not many people do it nowadays, do we really want to slow the site down for an entire week just for an alias meant to stop 2 guys edit warring wikis?

hetero is the exception that proves the rule in this case, no? else futanari would be called futa.
Is there a reason to have this when we already have the implication from vtuber to virtual youtuber?

For that case, Danbooru seems to follow the same shortening rules as Japanese users on Pixiv:
