Overuse of posing

Posted under Tags

The posing tag is currently being used in far, far more posts besides the ones where a character is "Assuming a particular attitude or position in order to be photographed, painted, or drawn." Which should be expected on a booru; the entire point is to post art, and many of it contains characters who are striking poses, and that leads people to tag posing. Plus, often it's a wash as to whether a character is intended to be posing for a hypothetical artist they're aware of, or they're intended to be posing for some other reason and the art just portrays that.

The name is too misleading. I think there should be more specific tags which are named more in line with what they are intended for, like posing_for_photo & posing_for_painting, and posing ought to be dropped.

I suppose another option would be to change the purpose of posing to cover all instances where a character is intentionally posing for any reason, but that sounds dreadful.

We deprecated pose because bizarre poses could go into posing. if we deprecate posing too, then how do we tag things like post #11396834?

I don't think that's true? Pose got depreacted in forum #225918 and there isn't a mention of using posing instead. Posing wasn't reused until about 4 months after pose got deprecated. The wiki for posing also doesn't state that's the intended use either, merely:

"Assuming a particular attitude or position in order to be photographed, painted, or drawn."

If it can't be deprecated because of a need to find things like post #11396834, it probably needs to have a name and wiki change to reflect that it should be used for bizarre poses. Otherwise, it's probably doomed to fall as a useful tag no matter how many times it's gardened.
