Sumarising things as they stand for others so they dont have to backread as much nor the numerous discord comments:
Some people have been suggesting self-datamine or something along those lines. I have a datamine that doesnt have a source. It was extracted from the games CDN against their wishes (no longer works and they changed CDNs). Havent upped it because sourceless + procastination.
I dont have a silver bullet answer for this thread I would encourage people to ensure the tag/(s) we come to:
1. Meaninfully increases discoverability
2. Doesnt add useless noise/padding
3. Is realistic about maintainability

remove alias game_asset -> game_cg
In topic #34901, evazion had the following to say: "We need a tag for datamined game assets too that don't have a valid source because they were extracted by the uploader." When following this up in the Discord, he had this to add:
evazion: it drives me crazy how people neglect to create obviously necessary tags, like for datamined assets or for the different categories of official art, but we get shit like official_alternate_eye_color
evazion: game_cg was originally supposed to be for in-game CG scenes for hentai games before it got turned into what it is today
evazion: this is what I was talking about when I said not making necessary tags for new concepts
evazion: instead of making new tags for other categories of official art, they all got dumped in here
evazion: someone who isn't me needs to make a new tag for datamined assets and sort it all out
evazion: just browse the official_art tag and notice the different categories of art and how we have no way of distinguishing them
evazion: there are in-game splash screens, character profiles for when new characters are announced on twitter, those things like tachi-e but with a diorama background
user #499293: faux figurine you mean?
evazion: I guess so, but it's undertagged; post #10658358
user #499293: right, and these ones are sprites like the ratatos one, but not tachi-e
I expressed how making a new tag wouldn't make sense due to game asset being aliased to game CG, and that any non-self-datamine tag necessarily requires its unaliasing and restoration (though whether we want to keep its original name or switch it to datamine is a different question entirely.
Regardless, this should help us get one step closer to resolving the current situation with game CG, the lack of a datamine/self-datamine tag, everything discussed in this thread and others (like sprite, forum #216020), and everything evazion highlighted.
One reason I went further and proposed reversing the alias, not just removing it, was that if people are using game_cg so broadly anyway, it would be difficult to narrow its scope back to what it originally was. Besides, game_cg sounds rather vague even if it's known in some circles to refer to a specific kind of VN image. It might be better to just make a cutscene tag for those instead.
evazion: character profiles for when new characters are announced on twitter,
I thought those didn't qualify for the current use of game_cg in the first place since they're not actually extracted from games.
I guess one of the things we can start doing is specifying the type of game asset art, as opposed to lumping them all under game cg.
For example:
And many other types I've yet to think of.
(We already have an official wallpaper tag, so there's no need for anything related to that.)
I thought card_(medium) would cover card art. However, while the wiki doesn't actually say it, the way it's worded makes it sound like the border elements would need to be present. Some of the artwork are used for "cards" in the gacha sense, but don't actually look like cards, especially when you remove the border elements. I think as far as naming tags go, "card art" would be a step in the right direction since the name implies it's about the actual art on the card, but it still sounds a bit vague.
A little demonstration of all the different styles of official art that are currently dumped under game cg or are related.
A style of skin art and upgraded art popularized by Granblue Fantasy and then Arknights. Has become a form of art as prominent as tachi-e and game cg, but lacks a recognized term.

It would also take some of the strain off card (medium), as right now if you want mimics of like actual playing or trading cards, which gacha cards take up the majority of. It could alternatively imply card (medium) if we want a tag for gacha cards specifically.
We need a full plan here. What's the final tag gonna be called? game asset? Where will VN background slides go? Do we need visual novel background?
I'm in favor of this but we need a proper plan to not fuck it up halfway through.

Given self-datamine, the final tag would be called datamine.

Game assets posted by the official company would not be datamined. My impression is that we want a tag for game assets, so game asset would be a fine for it. I think I will approve forum #386409 (game_cg -> game_asset) if there's no opposition.

Then at least a datamine utility alias.
