Reorganizing music

Posted under Tags

BUR #56527 has been rejected.

create alias music -> musical_performance
remove alias music -> musical_performance
create alias performing_music -> musical_performance
deprecate music

Ever since I created audible music back in 2018, that's left music in a tricky situation, since the name would make you think that it refers to audible music, but you then check it and find it's for drawn representations of music, nothing audible. The way our tags interact across mediums is already a bit tenuous (ex. drawn moaning ala post #4430404 [rating:e] not being taggable on animated posts due to potential confusion with audible moaning, as a result of topic #20767), so this ambiguity between music and audible music is not helping matters.

So I'm proposing we deprecate music and rename it to musical performance. Concert currently defines itself as a "live musical performance done in front of an audience" but we all know that's a simplified definition ala comic's current definition, as it accounts for broader concert stuff too, so the name shouldn't cause any issues with concert.

I initially considered also including playing_music as a utility alias, but NiceLittleDan and Hankpropaniac57 pointed out its ambiguity, the former with how it can be confused with listening to music and the latter with how it might confuse folks who might want to tag playing instrument, so that should be manually deprecated after this BUR goes through.

music also has people singing in karaoke like in post #11002475. I don't know if I'd call that a "performance".

Technically it counts, because you are 'performing music' by singing karaoke, even if it just reading lyrics. But given the fact that evazion himself says that the music situation needs to be unfucked, there's no world where the tag stays just 'music'.

Would you rather it be changed to 'musical expression'?

Should karaoke imply musical performance or whatever the new tag becomes?

There is value in having a distinction between a proper street/band (music) performance and a pretty off-the-fly casual activity that involves music but isn't exactly a full musical performance like karaoke. It may be "technically" a performance but they're significant(ly different) enough activities in ACG that they should remain separately tagged.

Does it all have to fit into one tag? I didn't think about someone strumming a guitar all by themselves but that's also a considerably common trope that feels worth a separate tag as well. I don't think they should all be forced into one tag, that seems doomed for bad naming ideas because it'll usually only satisfy one type of musical involvement while stretching the definition for the others.

Karaoke is already (kind of) great on its own, assuming people aren't mistaking or mistagging it for karaoke box where there's a non-karaoke activity taking place in a karaoke room. If the implications are a problem, maybe they should also be removed and reorganised. Singing can be a solo casual thing, a solo performance for an audience or part of a group of people. So having those linger around seems to me like it's hamstringing ideas for what this could become or be split into.

BUR #57103 is pending approval.

deprecate music
mass update music (playing_instrument or singing) -> -music

All in all I don't think it makes much sense to group together wildly different things like "someone at a karaoke", "a band playing professionally", and "music coming out of a radio".

There's 1k posts under music -playing_instrument -singing, so we would need to create alternative tags for all the remaining concepts. There's a lot of random things like spoken musical note or sheet music in there. Do we have a tag for floating/flying sheet music like in post #11012598?

musical performance makes sense as a separate tag for bands playing but it could probably just be aliased to concert.

I agree with the BUR, but shouldn’t the mass update be (playing_instrument or singing) music -> -music? Unless I’m completely missing something.
