Made this tag because profanity is too broad and I think most people are desensitized by "fuck" & co nowadays.
Made small adjustment to the wiki to cover other cases of perjoratives (such as against disabled people, I saw someone misuse ableism for that purpose a bit ago), and added a Wikipedia link.
I'm surprised this tag didn't already exist, it definitely seems like something people may want to blacklist.
I don't want to rock the boat, but I can see the potential for some edit wars down the road if this isn't addressed.
How should we handle the insult "retard"? I understand it was mainly used as an edgy way of calling people stupid in the past, but now it's widely considered a slur against the mentally disabled and you hardly hear anyone use it outside of a few circles. And yet even though the Community Rules state users aren't allowed to use slurs (technically racist and sexist slurs, but we don't allow homophobic or transphobic slurs either), this word is still occasionally used by Danbooru users of all levels without any repercussions, which tells me Danbooru just considers it an insult instead of a slur, at least in practice.
This means if we acknowledge "retard" as a slur for tagging purposes, it would be inconsistent with how the Community Rules are currently enforced and we'd have to acknowledge that some slurs are okay to use while others aren't. On the other hand, users trying to blacklist slurs probably would want to include this as well, so I'm leaning toward including it despite the inconsistency this would cause.
Either way, we need to figure out what to do with words with more controversial slur statuses like this, or we'll end up having edit wars between the "it's an ableist slur" and "it's just an edgy insult" camps.
For the purposes of tagging artwork, any offensive use of "retard" should always be tagged as slur, even if the victim character isn't actually retarded. This makes it easy to blacklist and rate as S, as seeing slurs in any context can be upsetting.
Would still definitely need to tailor your judgment to Danbooru, as Wikipedia lists things like "DEI hire", "gaijin", and "savage" as ethnic slurs. Those might not fall under the slur tag even if used extremely offensively.
On Danbooru itself, calling someone a retard is rarely considered "hateful" because the subject doesn't actually identify as intellectually disabled—you aren't attacking their identity; you're just calling them extremely stupid (effectively a synonym).
Also note that the slur rule only calls out racism/sexism (i.e., discrimination). Mods would probably take action simply based on rule 1: the comment being unfriendly.

For me, the grey area is fictional slurs like clanker. Objectively, these are slurs, even though they would not offend any real humans (except people with prosthetics). But would these few posts pollute the slur tag? In the meme, the slur is still used hatefully, as it's directly based on "nigger".

I don't think fictional slurs should be included, personally speaking. As you said, they do not target real humans and would not really offend any real humans, and it's not really the kind of thing someone looking to blacklist slurs would be looking to hide in most cases.

The full rule states:
Don't engage in hate speech, use racist or sexist slurs, or engage in other hateful conduct.
I addressed the racism/sexism part earlier. Homophobic and transphobic slurs have been treated with the same weight by mods from what I've seen. I don't believe the rule was meant to be read as only racist and sexist slurs being forbidden.
There used to be a time where there wasn't any explicit rule stated forbidding racist comments because albert assumed it was so obvious that it didn't need to be said (forum #24555).
I guess we could say we're already tolerating some slurs since I doubt anyone here would get banned just for using the word "bitch," but the difference is most other people online or IRL don't really treat it as a slur either, so it's considered more socially acceptable in general.

Maybe we should make a fake_slur umbrella tag for those.
I think retard is fine in the slur tag. It's still a slur IRL even though online it's been completely watered down.
When I made this tag, the idea in my mind was to collect stuff that will actually get you fired if your boss sees you looking at these images at work. "Fuck" is fairly harmless as a word nowadays, at least on the internet, and profanity is extremely diluted, so it's hard to remove (or search for) actual infohazard profanity. Having a single tag for it makes it easier to blacklist (or search for, if you're looking for edgy content) and to check that we're properly rating it as rating:sensitive and not rating:general.
A tag for fake slurs like clanker is also fine. Another I can think of is knife-ears for elves.

Sorry to bump, but would it be possible to get a list of some of the words that apply to this, especially the non-racist ones? I asked on the discord server about the word in post #11061690 and was told it should go in slur, but I can see it's been removed. Some words might be obvious, and I get that it'd look really bad to open a wiki and be hit with strong profanity, but I'd like some general guidance on what applies.
