Cage shapes...

Posted under Tags

i wanted to search for bdsm cages like post #10186541 and post #10124598 which are box-shaped. that is impossible because more than 50% of the cage tag are birdcages.

the "birdcages" aren't even cages for birds. they are just huge cages that fit people inside almost every time. so i decided to tag all posts that have a flat circular bottom cage with birdcage so i could tag the remaining posts with the other shapes. i ended up finding spherical ones too so i tagged those.

i don't like the fact that birdcage is mainly huge cages either but given that it's primarily used as an analogy for "i'm like a bird trapped inside a cage" or something like that the only solution i can think of is to make a separate tag like human-sized birdcage so people can exclude it to find bird-sized birdcages or just tell them to search for bird birdcage instead or something like that.

There are square birdcages in real life too; typically a bird cage has a perch to sit on. So while birdcage should be birdcages, we should have separate rectangular cage and round cage tags.

Edit: Should we alias birdcage to round cage? But then it might be strange to have "large round cage" as opposed to "large birdcage"... Note there could be things other than humans inside them hence not "human-sized birdcage".

I think some would constitute that as tag poisoning, you know.

Not against the idea, but I'm fairly certain that birdcages got that shape from actual cages, not the other way around, so a seperate tag would probably not be called that.

given there is spherical cage i think circular cage would make more sense. the problem is most of the tags tagged birdcage probably come form the pixiv tag 鳥かご. people won't tag cages with a circular bottom as round cage if they are already tagging the cage as birdcage.

imo given that birdcages are 99% round bottom i think we should just alias birdcage (rectagnular) to rectangular cage.

in my defense, the birdcage tag was already full of cages of all shapes before i start tagging them. it was already impossible to find "actual" birdcages for birds unless you searched for bird birdcage.

some posts tagged "birdcage" that i didn't tag

post #10873736 this has "horizontal" bars and looks nothing like a birdcage
post #10822788 this could be any structure imaginable with bars that join at the top
post #10647654 you can only see the round bottom of this structure
post #10529892 you can only see the bars that curve slightly
post #10613490 the elevator from hollow knight
post #10500389 grey from fate holding that cage/lantern thing

so all of this was already tagged "birdcage" and the only thing all of these posts have in common is that it's a cage with a circular flat bottom and a round top with a hook/thing to hold

imo it would be easier to make a separate tag for birdcages that are actually designed to have birds in it like aviary or birdcage for birds or something like that

Most of the results for "cage" do seem to be birdcages or larger cages in that general shape. In cage reveals more rectangular ones but is still largely birdcage shaped.

I don't think this is the default, but also I don't know if it's actually something people would search as opposed to in cage, behind bars, or holding cage.

people couldn't possibly search for behind bars because i made that tag today, which is weird because i'd think someone else should have done it already.

No, tag poisoning is tag poisoning. Blaming others for mistagging as well is not how it works, you should know better. Make a favgroup if you want to categorize it.

if you are concerned about tag poisoning just define the birdcage tag in a way that excludes the posts you don't want in that tag and i'll go garden it. before i rewrote the wiki this is what it said

A birdcage is a cage designed to house birds as pets.

unless people have started keeping 3 meter tall birds as pets that means i'm going to have to remove the tag from 50% of the posts including all of those that have a person inside a "birdcage". it also means we'll have mistags forever since people tag 鳥かご on pixiv with people inside cages so it's going to appear in the translated tags. which means you have to write a different definition that captures that and not just revert it.
