The previous thread from three years ago can be found in topic #23752. All of the points made back then are still true now, so I'll include them here:

All of the variants in this BUR are nothing more than pure tag bloat which can be made searchable with just one single tag - one_eye_closed. ;D is just :D one_eye_closed. ;o is just :o one_eye_closed. ;P is, you guessed it, just :P one_eye_closed. There is absolutely no need to have over ten different tags that only exist to denote that a character has one of their eyes closed, especially since we already have an immensely more useful tag that covers all cases.

In response to the potential argument of "they'll flood the results for non-closed eyes" - on average, these ; variants are only around 15% the size of the original emoticon tags. Only about 1/9 posts will be one_eye_closed, and if you really don't want any in your search, then it's a very simple matter to add "-one_eye_closed".

;) is a deprecation rather than an alias because a large amount of them are missing the closed_mouth tag, and they can't all just be blanket updated because there are 5.5k results for ;) ~open_mouth ~grin ~parted_lips. I imagine it was never implicated because many users assumed it was for any kind of smile (:) is just aliased to smile). However, this had the added "bonus" of many other users not adding closed_mouth when using ;), likely assuming such an implication already existed. Yet another reason to be done with these tags as soon as possible.

What I failed to mention last time is that in addition to all of this, having these seperate winking tags means that they fracture searches. If I do a search for, say, :D, I am missing out on over 70,000 posts with this mouth shape because they were tagged with the winking variant instead. The fact that the :D one_eye_closed search already works is evidence enough that many users see no distinction between these tags, and that this BUR's approval will not impact searches in any negative manner.

The ;/ and ;s lines are mass updates because they do not currently imply one_eye_closed.

Edit: Despite how they look, the lines in the BUR that deal with the ;| tag are correct, they just appear as ; instead. It's a problem with dtext and an issue is already open on GitHub. If you'd like proof, try quoting this message and then searching for ";|".

i feel like you could just imply them instead... but ig you'd say it's tandem tags or something

i don't see the point in aliasing ;) -> :) though. they aren't the same thing so maybe it should all be deprecated

btw why the fuck is :( -> frown. the dictionary says "frown" means "furrowing one's brows" and we already have furrowed brow. like... if a character has a :( mouth but the brows are raised instead what do you tag it?

They should just be implied imo. They're common enough that I think it's stupid to disallow member users to not be able to search for them and another tag.

You could say the same of long_blonde_hair, or closed-eye_smile, or happy_vaginal, or any other common combination of tags. This is not an argument for these tags, but rather a criticism of the two-tag search restriction placed on member users. Instead of propogating the bandaid that these tags provide, get evazion to raise member-level searches to three tags. There's no need to have it be this restrictive, especially with Gold upgrades on an indefinite hiatus.

I would want to at least keep ;), as it seems there is no alternative, and smile one_eye_closed has a lot of open mouth or grin false positives. You'd have to either exclude those tags or add closed mouth to the search.

This is a valid concern, so here's a BUR without the deprecation. There's over a thousand posts under ;) solo ~open_mouth ~parted_lips ~grin ~teeth, however, so the tag does need a bit of cleanup.

BUR #57108 is pending approval.

Look, I am willing to entertain just keeping these tags because it's a pain in the ass to search for them as a blue user now that you can't even buy gold, and there's a lot of false positives in all of them.

The :D & co tags are already used for things like both closed eyes anyway, so unless we want to also make subtags for those (we don't), there's no point in trying to keep them mutually exclusive.
