Have Ranunculus imply buttercup (flower), then alias it to Persian buttercup.

"Buttercup" and "Ranunculus" are the common name and scientific name respectively for the same group of plants, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranunculus

However, the wiki for Ranunculus, as currently written, suggests that it is misnamed. It isn't really about Ranunculus in general, but the species Ranunculus asiaticus in particular. So it should be renamed.

Alternatively, alias Ranunculus to buttercup (flower).

If it weren't for the fact that Ranunculus is just barely over 200 posts, I would've suggested doing a rename for Ranunculus to Persian Buttercup, and then having Ranunculus alias Buttercup, since as it is right now you'd have to unalias it from Persian Buttercup post-approval to alias it to Buttercup.

It does not necessarily need to be renamed. Strictly speaking, you're just suggesting changing it from one common name (scientific) to another (common English). But I agree with the implication.

This isn't the first time in Danbooru's history when you could use something like "for tagging purposes". And it is not uncommon for people to use such words in everyday speech and/or horticulture. You can search online to see what people associate with the word "ranunculus", for example:

Yes, technically, they're not exactly correct, but that's common in languages.

By the way, the Japanese also prefer to use ラナンキュラス (literally "Ranunculus").
