Why "skin tight" and not "skintight"?

Greetings and felicitations. Why the spelling "skin tight" and not "skintight" as in the dictionary?

Cambridge and a few other dictionaries list it as skin-tight. While Oxford and a few others list it as skintight.

Could be discussed but to be fair I don't really think it matters that much as skintight is already aliased to it.

Done—I hadn't noticed that option/menu.

Edit: Note that the Cambridge dictionary also lists the unhyphnated version.
