No YouTube Video Thumbnail tag

Posted under Tags

So we have two tags that are both called thumbnail yet are used in completely different ways, one of which appears to describe an image sample literally ripped from a video and another one that is supposed to be used like cover image.

Also, why is it even a meta tag? We don't have things like cover page, cover image or art program in frame as meta tags. Evidently too, it's not even applied well. YouTube video thumbnail at least actually tags all thumbnail samples; video thumbnail seems to be a mix of both samples and "full size images" (ETA: or even an entire 47 second video being tagged as such).

More alternatively, do we or should we even care? Should we start tagging every fanart that a virtual youtuber or other random person uses for their video thumbnails? There are some guidelines in the wiki but I don't know if they're any useful and how prone to mistagging it is with a bad name like thumbnail.

What sensible alternatives do we have on the table? I personally don't really like YouTube video thumbnail as a tag.

Going to reject this for now, would prefer more discussion and/or smithing of both tags before I resubmit this. I've thought about it a bit more and rechecked both the wiki of video thumbnail and the posts that both tags are applied to and I don't think it's safe to nuke or merge them like this yet, but I do still think that something should be done about the tags whether it's giving them a better name or figuring out if we even care about this information on posts enough to tag them, and why they're meta tags and not general tags.
