In the end I think I actually like dark better now as it sounds much simpler. "This image is dark" comes to mind much readily for me than "There is darkness in this image".
That doesn't mean darkness as a "pseudo-tangible thing" can't be distinguished, but I don't know that it can be distinguished easily and often enough to warrant a separate tag.
