Tag Discussion: final_fantasy_pose

Posted under General

When I saw post #496255, I wondered if final_fantasy_pose had been given to it. The tag is based on the BEFORE CRISIS art, but has been applied about as 'often' to parallel face-offs. The post linked especially gives me a Persona (3) vibe, but I get the feeling I've seen it used with something else.
EDIT: Hm, maybe Riviera, or even FusionFall.

So, what would be a better tag for that sort of thing (or things, if the versus and one-sided types should be separate)? Preferrably something independent of a property, yeah?

Well I'd have no real issues with face-off, I also don't really care for it. For me the term brings up images of two characters face to face, and really more of a one on one fight. Additionally in my mind it is also kind of tied with both sidings being symmetrically depicted. Simply put for every one character on one side, there needs to be an equal character on the opposite. That is quite common to be honest, but there are some where you have asymmetrical forces facing off.

I think the most important component of the images tagged as final fantasy pose is the fact that two groups are "rushing into battle", not just standing there. The characters are usually pointing, running, aiming, or otherwise engaged in some action directed towards the other side. opposing sides to me seems to indicate something much more static. At least face-off gives the impression of a staring contest, which shows some sort of enmity.

Yay, this subject finally comes up about 3 or 4 years after I intially created the tag :p.

I'm all for changing the name of it into something more intuitive. Personally I'm fine with opposing_sides, even if it'd be kind of odd for the images that are decipting only one side. And while 0xCC brings up a valid point, I don't think it's anything that a properly written wiki entry couldn't wouldn't counter.

(Resurrect this thread because it came up in forum #75989.)

So, two years later both final_fantasy_pose and opposing_sides are in use, somewhat interchangeably. Is there any value in having both? Or can we alias the two into opposing_sides?

If the both tags are kept, we will need to properly clarify the definition of final_fantasy_pose and clean up. The tag originates from post #167765; Possible interpretations:

  • (per aldeayeah) the original actually depicts only one side. We could distinguish the two tags on the basis of one side vs two sides.
  • (per 0xCCBA696) the original has characters "rushing into battle", this could be the requirement, without regard for one side or two sides. By this interpretation, the likes of post #190577 and post #564714 would no longer qualify.

+1 to changing, because looking at most of these pictures I would not make the connection between them and Final Fantasy at all, let alone believe from seeing the name "Final Fantasy" what the tag is really about, which is a group of people staring at each other/the other side of the image. Unless they're intentionally parodying specific Final Fantasy images like post#780454 does, I don't see why final fantasy needs to show up in the tags at all.

final_fantasy_pose should definitely be dropped. opposing_sides is already in use and I don't think there's a more fitting term without getting more specific and narrowing it's scope.

However, I think it would be nice if there could be a distinction in the tags between whether or not one or two sides are actually depicted. It would be hard to find one or the other if you couldn't. We could have an opposing_side tag alongside opposing_sides, used only for when there is one group in the picture.

Because it looks like they're opposing something more often than not. It's not perfect, but unless you have better way of describing the grouped formation that's all we've got. Besides, it's not that unusual to have an off-screen or unseen enemy in art, is it?

As for the similarity in the names, we have other tags like this already (arms_up) and they do just fine.
