I support this. The same goes with iron sights, the most common spelling is iron sights according to Wikipedia.

This seems like a padding tag. I'd just nuke it.

It's fine. Well I thought based on the Wiki page of ironsights, its usage is reserved when iron sights are prominent, more focused and depicted in more details in an image (for instance, post #586225, but not to be used for handgun ones). I treated it the same way with magazine (weapon), I only use it when the mag is separate from the gun.
I think it's OK when you proposed to nuke iron sights. Because almost all guns have them, such tag is too obvious just like why eyes are deprecated. While I treated iron sights as the gun counterpart of eye focus
I also found a tag trigger which currently has 88 posts, while not having a Wiki page. Such feature is extremely obvious, found on all gun designs. Unlike folding stock or bolt action that are particularly unique for each model. It feels like having mouth tag for every character. Excuse me, do you think trigger should

create implication open_labcoat -> lab_coat
Character is wearing lab coat. Do you think its spelling should be fixed into open lab coat as well?

mass update open_labcoat -> -open_labcoat open_coat lab_coat
I'd rather see it all moved to open_coat lab_coat. Lab coats are a type of coat, not their own garment. We don't need x_lab_coat tags.
I didn't even know we had an open labcoat tag, I've always just used open clothes with them. Not sure if I agree on them being coats just because it's in the name, I don't think we consider raincoats as coats either.
Most lab coats are long enough to qualify for coat, so it wouldn't be just about having coat in the name. But I doubt this is 100% true thanks to artistic interpretation, which means a manual update might be required. Let me suggest an open labcoat deprecation instead.
