[REJECTED] Updating mariabel to the intended romanization Maribelle

Posted under Tags

mass update mariabel_(fire_emblem) -> maribelle_(fire_emblem)

Link to request

Really? we went with mariabel as the translation?

A bit more text: the official english version, and the wiki have her named Maribelle and i'm 1000% positive that was the original intent in naming her マリアベル in the original japanese version too.

EDIT: The bulk update request #1749 (forum #148914) has been rejected by @keonas.

If you google "Mariabell" in quotes you'll find multiple real people named that mixed in among fandom stuff, like this one (she's been dead for quite some time so it should be okay to link, I hope.) It's less common than Maribelle but it certainly still qualifies as "actually a name."

well, i knew someone was going to jump on those edge cases -_- there always is one.
Should have also wrote that you only get 100k results for "mariabel" (the one we have here), while you get almost 400k just for "Maribelle fire emblem" and over 2 mil for Maribelle.

Anyway, if everyone feels so strongly about it, then i'll cancel the request and we'll keep mariabel as the name.
I'll create an implication for "maribelle_(fire_emblem) -> mariabel_(fire_emblem)" so at least people coming from other sites can find her.
It's not like it's the 1st or last time we have a character/series named differently here then on every other english site :/.

That should be an alias, not an implication, and the correct spelling as shown in the image @feline_lump linked is "Mariabell" so the tag should be mariabell_(fire_emblem). (Changing mariabel to mariabell can be a bulk update or a manual move.)

Another example why it's a bad idea to use localized Fire Emblem names is Sheeda from Shadow Dragon, who is "Shiida" in the Latin American/European versions of the game (and tbh should probably be tagged that as a more precise romanization of シーダ, though I don't mean to start another debate) and "Caeda" in the American version. What would we do with Maribelle if an upcoming release in another region or a port/remake spells her name "Marybel" or something else entirely?
