Hair color tags

Posted under Tags

There are two tags for generally unnatural hair colors that I have a question about: streaked hair and highlights. Both are types of either two-tone hair or multicolored hair. The wiki for streaked hair explains that the color must be one or more small streaks of different color. The wiki for highlights says that the tag is to be used for one strip of specifically unnatural color for that character, and that one natural-colored strip of hair that is different would go under two-tone hair.

I was looking for clarification on the definitions and if they could possibly be updated to give a better differentiation between them. They almost seem to be used for the same attributes in many posts. I also wasn't sure where characters like Ninomiya Asuka (in, for example, post #2706638 or post #2688693) would fall under, because with the current definitions it would be neither tag. Her hair is dyed intentionally but it is in two long strips, not one strip as in highlights, and not one or more small streaks as in streaked hair. It also, according to the wikis, would not belong under two-tone hair because it is colored unnaturally.

Highlights wiki
A noticeable strip of hair that stands out when rest of the hair is one solid color. The strip is lighter in tone or different in color.
Take note that this hair strip is not the natural hair color of the character. It is clear that it is dyed for style. If it is natural and abundant, go with the two-tone hair tag.

1st sentence: False. From some research apparently highlights are not just a single strip of hair of lighter colour, but many strips of any length and intensity.

2nd: True. The highlights are meant to make the hair stand out by dyeing in (specifically) lighter tones of your normal hair colour e.g. light brown hair on brown hair. For dyes of darker tones, these would be lowlights (not currently a tag).

3rd: False. The use of the word 'natural' is wrong. A natural hair colour would be brown, blonde, black etc. whereas unnatural hair colours would be purple, green, blue etc. The highlights must be a shade of your normal hair colour. For black hair, however, lighter shades would be grey which, for obvious reasons, is usually undesired so two-tone_hair or streaked_hair should be used for black hair with other colour highlights.

Most of the posts tagged with highlights should be tagged with streaked_hair.

Streaked hair

These are larger strips which are more prominent than highlights. The hair streak can be of any colour, natural or unnatural (but usually unnatural). The streak can be of any length e.g. from the root or just at the edges of the hair. Here on Danbooru the tag is mainly used for when a single streak of hair of different colour is seen.

Two-tone hair

As the highlights wiki has some false information, this hair style can be applied to both natural and unnatural hair colour which would make the tag apply to the two posts you mentioned. Personally I'd say this tag should only be used when the two distinct colours are equally present, i.e. about 50/50 of each colour to stop the overlap between these three tags.
