    My Home

I'm probably moving soon, so I drew my home for the sake of posterity. It's a real mess. → Apologies if it seems really strange... I left out the bedroom, bath, and toilet...! The worm-like thing is a vinyl tunnel for the ferrets to run through and play in.

Talk about compact. Western societies are more used to bigger space then this.
I, myself, like it though; it's modest.

I wouldn't be able to live in there. would need to get rid of some things to make up some space.

In certain eastern societies, you would sleep on the floor. Near that heater, For me.

In certain apartments; out the door, down the hallway, on your left. you can't miss it.

    That's not an apartment; that's a hostel.

You'd open up a lot more space at the entrance area by removing that pony wall and overhanging area to the wall just left of it. Trying to hide the impression that you're "walking into the kitchen" in this kind of house is pointless and trying to creating the distinction between "kitchen" and "some other room" is just eating up space.

Now, please don't compare your ideas of houses and rooms to that of the Japanese. For them, a more compact house is better because their mindset about Japan islands is "a small landmass", so they don't really need those extra space. That's why there are a lot of those so called "mansions" or what would we call "apartments".

This is most likely one of those mansion. You can sleep behind the wall in the computer room. And you still need that kitchen table as it provides more storage compartments and I think there's a sink attached to it.

What I'm concerned is the toilet, however. I think it's outside of the room and it's most probably a public toilet inside the complex.

Another alternative is that sofa is actually a folding bed or sorts. So at night you put away the table in front of it and voila, double bed.

The kotatsu is actually a seasonal item. People only put it out on cold seasons like Winter, and the heaviness makes it hard to be set up daily, especially when it's a kotatsu with heater attached to it. So, people only put it out when it off season and, usually, they replace it with a small coffee table instead.

Yes, they really need those tables as a dining table, especially in a small apartments like this.

Walls don't exist just to create partitions between rooms. That wall you're talking about includes the kitchen counter, the cooktop, and almost certainly some cabinets as well. Whatever you'd stand to gain in terms of "space" by knocking out a useful wall, it wouldn't make up for the loss of utility and storage.
