You know... I used to think the original Gundam design was mundane and simple... and too colorful. I remember I said to myself... "This anime must be like the Power Rangers or something...".

That was until I played the games and saw the 3 movies...

Oh boy... How wrong I was back then...

Hurm...If I recall, the "moveable inner frame" wasn't designed until the Titans Test Team's suits were engineered. The RX-70 lineup was all magnetic joints and thrusters with rocket engines. The rest was either hollow or solid Gundarium.

If you look at the layout of the frame and armor its extremely tight and lacks flexibility. The suit in this case is built within the armor. Look how much of the armor is a single block.

While a mobile frame suit as the armor built to cover the suit. Its more fragmented to incorporate the more flexible body of a mobile frame suit. Armor is mounted to protect more than hold the body together.

I recall Tomino saying somewhere that the original design was to be all white and simple, like, y'know, a weapon. And with focus on realism. The sponsors, being toy companies, weren't too happy with that, so the bright, highly conspicuous colors were added. Along with the gimmicky add-ons and villains-of-the-week.

The RX-78-2 Gundam's controls was easy as a learning software.

this was told in the Gundam Data.
