I remember playing New Super Mario Bros and if you defeat enough enemies for the duration of the mega mushroom you actually gain a bunch of 1ups.

Peach, being the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, presumably possesses some powerful magic that extends the duration of said mushrooms, or possibly even makes them permanent.

For Mario, a mega mushroom only lasts 30 seconds. How long does it last for Peach?
