its a parody of Battle Royale, a novel (and later made into a film). In the story, because of overpopulation and a failing education system, the Japanese government initiated a program to reduce population by taking a group of kids to an isolated location, providing them with weapons, and having them fight to the death. they're all wired with explosives, and are told if there's not only 1 person left alive at the end of 3 days, they will all be exploded

Depends what some on would consider criteria for a film adaptation to be a success.. also many films fail in the box office, but still go on to become cult classic.
