IIRC, both Mizuki-san and SanaeWife are actual manga artists. There's been at least a few strips where one or the other (usually SanaeWife) is shown stuck at home drawing to meet a deadline.

A potato ship? They are the most common (and sometimes beautiful, depending on the artist).
