This reminds me of days yore, the folks 'round those parts has a local delicacy they call "Kuih lapis" (Lit: Layered pastry) which, as its name implies, has multiple layers of moist and soft goodness. It looks very alike to a hishimochi, only that it's usually just red and white, has thinner layers, and its layers alternate between colours.
I used to peel it layer by layer and shove the suckers inside my mouth. They are good eatin'. Kinda believe that the red layer is tastier than the white, though.

Oh man, I miss those. Nowadays the kuih that I found are either not as good as back then, or just out right too expensive. Or both.
