I noticed immediately that Patchy was breaking up the three umbrella girls, as she's the wrong SDM girl to be there as Remilia is the actual 4th umbrella girl.

Another thing I noticed quickly because I tend to skip over the top and look at the front end placements first, so I notice things like 10/20/30/40/50 are all front end this year... two stage 2s and three stage 3s. I typically miss patterns with the back end characters before they come up in pictures (like the Scarlet and Yuka/Yuyu sandwiches).

The contest works by giving a first place vote for the one girl you want to win giving them +2, then giving 4 other girls a secondary vote that gives them +1. Reimu and Marisa actually had more first place votes, but Koishi had a ton secondary votes. She's apparently everyone's 2nd/3rd/4th/5th favorite.
The touhou fandom has declined a bit over the years and Koishi got featured in lot of stuff recently. Maybe the people that would have voted for Reimu or Marisa left, while Koishi's new appearences put her over the top.
Or maybe popularity contests are just wacky like that.
Well, at least my personal top 5 are in the top 20... Although Patche's gonna need more love soon to stop the gradual slippage.
I'm still confused by a few of these, though... Rumia's more popular than Cirno HOW? Lunasa's also surging in the polls for some reason...
You need to take into account derivative works from artists that are particularly popular within the fanbase. I have also seen some appearances in anime like Hayate_no_Gotoku, Umineko_no_Naku_Koro_Ni, and Denki-gai_no_Hon'ya-san to name a few. Then there's appearances in popular manga series as well. I'm fairly certain that can affect results along with the fluctuating fanbase and rise in American popularity.

I guess people started losing interest on Cirno since a while now, as she has been losing places constantly in the last years. Probably, her fanbase was't really that big, but she was getting constant boosts of attention by being in a lot of canon works and even getting her own game. The ones who usually voted for her because she was in many games switched to newer characters, like Kokoro or Koishi. Rumia and others like Parsee or Shiki, on the other hand, did better than Cirno even if they were outside of canon for years, so i guess their fans vote them because they actually like them, not because they are more often in canon works.
What is really weird is Momiji getting this high, considerating that she doesn't even have a single dialogue line or a PMiSS/SoPM profile. In B4 "Cuz of wolf ears": Maybe, but other animal-eared characters like Ran and Chen are really low.
You know, this is actually a second time Yumemi's inside an Aki sandwich. That said, it's the FIFTH Aki sandwich in 11 popularity polls. Is it some sort of tradition already? :3

Sure, but Reimu only had 45 more first place votes than Koishi... it wasn't like Koishi was hundreds behind, she did very respectable. She did not need a ton of 2nd place votes to do it, she was well in the running on 1st place votes, and Reimu failed to maintain pace. If you want to see 2nd place vote boost look at Hata no Kokoro, she got a 1st place vote count more typical of a character in the mid-20s, and placed in the mid-teens.
Also, Shou is looking for the pagota, which Nazrin has tracked down to being on Hina's head (just before she noticed she's being followed by Rin). And, of course, Kokoro and Yuyuko are doing a fan dance together.
Wait, I remember Marisa, of course, but Flandre? Which episode was that?

It was either 7th or 8th EP. Probably 8th. There was some rabling about novels, U.N. Owen, and ,,witch" living for 500 years. Kinda obvious poke at Flandre. Not written out in broad light, though.
