Haven't you ever wanted to clean up a PC like this even without being asked? :-)

There are PCs at work that slow, but we can't do anything about it due to usage policies. *grumble*

Reader-added tags include "IE: 'I don't understand'", "PC = Politically Correct, doesn't it", and "Yeah, I've...never been there".

The survey is down with the system:

    Which OS do you prefer?
    • Windows 3.1 (typo'd as "Winsows")
    • Windows CE
    • Windows Me
    • Windows VISTA
    • Windows RT 8

My dad's laptop was like this before I cleaned it up. I think some of his business software might have been to blame (he's retired, so I removed it) but two competing AOL Toolbar installations were drastically slowing down his internet browsers.

I have to agree. I feel compelled to clean up a bogged down and slow pc when I see one. I guess this is how car mechanics feel when they see a poorly running car. They can tell what the problem is by seeing/hearing it but usually cant go out of their way to fix it. Or something like that lol

There's a reason why I stick to using XP instead of upgrading to the latest OS - It's as far as my laptop can handle. Well, for an 8-year-old mid-range laptop, 9 years is well worth every penny spent. Plus, I never had to get it fixed aside from that one time the screen cable snapped just before its warranty ran out.

Plus, I never trust those toolbars anyway. There's a reason you're supposed to set your home screen to a search engine you know won't spam you with junk.

For the poll... Aw, shucks. No love for Windows XP?

And they love to piggyback on other installers. Sometimes, they don't even tell you they've installed.

You'd be surprised how fast Windows 8.1 runs on a 2007-era mid-range machine. It's quite unbelievable how Microsoft was able to squeeze that much performance out of their latest operating system.

That said, i use Linux most of the time anyway. Too used to it already (been using Linux for 7 years in a stretch as opposed to 14 years, non-consistant use of Windows)

    1. Windows XP
    2. Windows 7

I have tried Windows 8 and 8.1 but still don't like that.

I think that the poll's joke is that they're all meant to be old or crap.

Anyway, windows ME seems to be the closest to somthing good.

I prefer Vistake, although the loli 3.1 has a nice charm to her.

The computer in my college library runs Windows 7, and it is as slow as this one...

For the poll, I never used the first three choice, so I can only choose RT 8. BTW, the RT 8 is the OS for the Surface tablet, right?

I was fine with Windows ME, but I was also too young to have the internet when I was using it, too.

There's a difference between "squeezing performance out" and "actually making it work properly," which I'd still argue hasn't been entirely accomplished.

    Quite the options there.

XP x64: 1 year and 1.5 month passed since install and still working.
Well... dunno how, but I manage to keep XP working for years while 7 start, shut down and every interaction with this OS is accompanied with word Perkele!
On contrary, people around me - often had problems with XP and 7 was "simple" for them.
Windows 8.1? Too lazy to pirate'n'hack, besides don't really need upgrade OS - most of software supported even XP x64 version, but TBH with every update chances to stop support are raising (which not stop to use obsolete versions).

Oh the joys of Windows Vista Home Basic on a single core Celeron and the inability to install service packs. Yay flashbacks!

    Vista.

Windows 7 is just Vista with an extra service pack and the more annoying elements of its UAC muted. You can use programs to manually shut off those annoying UAC elements, and it works just fine. While annoying, there wasn't anything terribly flawed with Vista (which is why it was basically just painted over and repackaged into the much more popular Windows 7 and sold just fine).

I bought Vista when it first came out (because every computer game was going to require DX10, or so I was told...) had that computer run for 8 years without needing an upgrade (after I killed the damn UAC) besides having to replace a hard drive.

Compare that to stuff like ME, which were flaming disasters, things that are completely obsolete, and/or Windows with all the functionality torn off with a hacksaw, the choice is obvious.
