Meiling's 'burning the boats' strategy could be paying homage to the Battle of Chibi in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, where Zhuge Liang and Zhou Yu defeated Cao Cao's naval forces by burning their transports.

no, it's actually a homage to Xiang Yu during the Chu-Han border war, during a battle which occurred before Han Xin Defected. The idea was to burn all the boats and destroy all the cooking equipment, which therefore made retreat impossible, so no soldiers could desert. Furthermore, the destruction of cooking supplies meant that the soldiers had to give their all and finish the battle as quickly as possible, improving motivation and determination.
Source: Books. Chinese books. Lots of them.
