Regarding the commentary, that's what happens to real-life grey horses. They start out black/dark colored, and the color fades over time, often in different portions of the body, until it eventually becomes all grey.
Tonari-chan is less than 5 years from the kid. compare that to Ai-chan and Onii-san who are suggested to be more than a decade apart in one of the manga chapters...
