She has long grey hair with an ahoge as well as grey eyes and headgear jutting out from the sides of her head.

Her default outfit is a military uniform consisting of a white sleeveless shirt with a blue necktie under a black jacket worn off shoulder that exposes her bare shoulders, a white pleated skirt, black pantyhose, and rudder footwear with shin guards. Her rigging includes her famed nine 16-inch (406 mm)/45-caliber Mark 6 guns, plus additional 12.7 cm twin gun mounts at kai form.

She is usually depicted with South Dakota, oftentimes at odds with each other, a reflection of the rivalry the crews of the two historical battleships had. The rivalry stems from ill feelings by South Dakota's crew who mistakenly thought they were bait for Washington's attack in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal where she severely damaged and sank Kirishima and Ayanami.
