uss enterprise (cv-6)

USSエンタープライズ(CV-6) エンタープライズ

The second of the Yorktown-class aircraft carriers for the United States Navy, that earned great renown for its actions in World War II. She was nicknamed "Big E", "Lucky E", "The Grey Ghost", and "The Galloping Ghost".

She fought in almost all of the battles in the Pacific Campaign and was considered a lucky ship due to surviving major damages and hardships. The Imperial Japanese Navy mistakenly believed they had sunk her on multiple occasions, only to encounter her again in later battles. Having earned twenty battle stars and numerous other awards, Enterprise was the most decorated U.S. ship of WWII, though contrary to popular belief is not the most decorated U.S. ship of all time.

After the war, several attempts were made to raise enough money to buy her from the US Navy and preserve her as a museum ship, but they all failed to reach the amount of money to do so. She was scheduled for scrapping on July 1, 1958 and was completely scrapped on May 1960.

This tag is for depictions of the actual vessel, and for personifications outside of established franchises.
