"Escaflowne of the Heavens", also called "Vision of Escaflowne"
A 26-episode anime series running from April until September 1996, with official art done by Yuuki Nobuteru. Escaflowne is a fantasy-based story that contains both shoujo and shounen storytelling aspects due to different directors handling the anime. Imagawa Yasuhiro tried to give it a more shounen feel prior to leaving, then Akane Kazuki took over and gave it more shoujo elements.
There is also a 90-minute film retelling the anime called Escaflowne - A Girl in Gaea, but with vastly different character personalities. Both Hitomi and Van are more depressed and emotional than their anime counterparts.
