A food item consisting of two pieces of bread with one or more fillings between them. Different from a burger because sandwiches don't have a beef patty between them, instead using cold cut meats or warmed slices of meat.
While the sandwich has existed for a long time, the food got it's current name from John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich (13 November 1718 β 30 April 1792), who depending on sources, had his chefs make a roast beef between two slices of bread for him to eat while the Earl was busy playing cards with his friends or doing paperwork at his job in the British Royal Navy.
