girly boy

A boy who acts recognizably feminine but can still be easily identified as male. "Onee" type boys will often be of this demographic, owing to girlish speech patterns or hobbies.

In general, the difference between this tag and trap is whether you can tell that the character is male without looking at the genitals. If you can, they're girly boy, otherwise they're a trap.

Most characters of this type will have an interest in topics typically associated with femininity (dandy-style fashion, beauty, cute things, etc.) and often are depicted in coquettish poses. They may wear high heels, jewelry, makeup and/or nail polish. Common hairstyles may be wavy or flipped.

Not to be confused with trap, which is a boy whose physical appearance is indistinguishable from a woman on first glance regardless of his personality. Also not to be confused with the term and archetype of "okama", though characters of either type can have girly boy traits. Crossdressing does not automatically make a character a "girly boy" either.

Sometimes, characters who fit this archetype are referred to as "femboys" in English, however use of this term overlaps with trap.

Examples

Notable characters

  • Scandinavia Peperoncino from Fate/Grand Order
  • Britney from Taiso Samurai
  • Narukami Arashi from Ensemble Stars! (Arashi identifies as female but is physically male, so from appearance alone she qualifies as a "girly boy")
