Yorktown was a vital participant in two major battles between the USN and the Imperial Japanese Navy: the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway. In both battles, however, Yorktown was severely damaged by Japanese attacks. As the carrier was being towed from Midway to Pearl Harbor for repairs, it was spotted and torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-168, which combined with its previous battle damage finally proved too much. The sunken wreck was discovered in 1998.
