Diddy Kong was originally conceptualized as a redesign for Donkey Kong Jr., but was instead told by Nintendo for him to be made into a new character. Super Smash Bros. (N64) and Donkey Kong 64 began to position him as being Donkey Kong's nephew, an element still supported by Diddy Kong's original designer Kevin Bayliss[1], but modern official bios disregard this entirely.
