A tate-eboshi (立烏帽子, lit. "standing eboshi cap") is a tall, cylindrical hat, traditionally black, worn by Japanese male aristocrats since the Heian period. It may sometimes have a chinstrap tied under the chin. Often worn with kariginu.

Though originally made of cloth, later versions were made of lacquered paper and other, more opaque, materials. These tend to have a very distinct, "crinkled" appearance on the outside. Today these tate-eboshi may still be seen worn by Shinto priests conducting ceremonies.

Notably worn by Mononobe no Futo and Soga no Tojiko of the Touhou series.

For the legendary figure nicknamed "Tate Eboshi", see Suzuka Gozen.

Not to be confused with kanmuri or tokin hat. Kanmuri (冠) is the formal court headwear that typically features a protrusion for the topknot, a hair stick that pierces the protrusion and a distinct rear appendage (ei). Tokin hat (頭巾) is the miniature, peaked black hat worn by Yamabushi tengu (ascetic hermits) and famously associated with Tengu.

    Examples

The headwear of the second character from the left in the bottom row is a kanmuri, while the black headpieces of other characters are eboshi featuring various foldings.
