    朱鷺 鴇 鵇 鴾 朱鹮

    The crested ibis (Nipponia nippon) is a bird species formerly living all over east Asia, especially Japan, as you can guess from the binomial name. In the last several decades their numbers have been dropping, and they were extinct in the wild in Japan as of 2003.

    Crested ibises appear in Curiosities of Lotus Asia, chapter 3 ("Illusionary Bird") as food, and so occasionally show up in Touhou fanworks. They are associated with Tokiko, who is mentioned in the previous story in that book; "toki" is the Japanese name for the crested ibis.
